Don Dixon is one of the music industry’s greatest unsung heroes: producer, musician, performer, vocalist and songwriter. He is perhaps best known for his work as producer for some of America’s favorite artists including R.E.M., Marshall Crenshaw, The Smithereens, and his wife, Marti Jones.
Recently, Don utilized several Auralex MAX-WALL stand-mounted panels to spot treat between performers at a remote tracking session.
I recently used an extremely small Max-Wall set up to great advantage in a session at a church. This wasn’t a live recording but I still wanted to create an environment that would encourage the musicians and singers to avoid the use of headphones. This meant keeping everyone in close proximity as well as careful phase control. In addition, both guitarists were playing acoustics while the drummer pounded away like a madman. I suspected I was in for some careful planning when he rolled his cooler of beer into the sanctuary.
I ended up with a simple triangular set up using the Max-Wall system for increased isolation around the guitars and singers. The light weight and convienient size of Max-Wall allowed me to easily try different positioning until I found the most effective location for everyone. Four of the six players laid down their cans (only the drummer & piano player decided they needed them) and I was quite pleased with the results. Plenty of isolation to tighten up the sound in this big church but the feel and pitch advantages of a ”no phones” performance.
I LOVE MY MAX-WALL!
